Why Do I Need to have a Colonoscopy?

Unlike almost all other cancers, colorectal cancer (CRC) can be safely removed during a screening exam. 90% of all CRC cases are curable with early detection and this simple outpatient procedure only require a few hours of your time. A colonoscopy can enable your gastroenterologist to diagnose other gastrointestinal disorders.

When should I get a Colonoscopy?

If you are 50 or older, the American Cancer Society recommends you get a Colonoscopy now and every ten years after that. Your gastroenterologist can determine if you are at a higher risk and let you know if you should have a colonoscopy more frequently.

What is involved when I have this done?

• Before - You will be given instructions on how to do a colonoscopy prep at home. The prep will be prescribed by your healthcare provider for you to use the day before your procedure. Following the steps prescribed is very important for the diagnostic test to provide the clearest results.
• During - You are sedated throughout the process and should experience no pain.
• After - Your physician will speak with you shortly after you wake up, go over your results, and provide you with a written report. Because the effects of sedation will make it unsafe for you to drive or return home alone, be sure and arrange for someone to assist you.
